Why so many owners say "Google Ads don't work for me"
Google Ads work. What doesn't work is the way most accounts are set up. Google turns on, or keeps "recommending", settings that make it easy to spend more. Most of them need far more data than a budget under $10,000 a month produces. On a small budget they mostly just raise your cost per lead.
The usual money-burners
Your ads show on websites and apps nobody searched on.
New campaigns can include Google's "partner" sites and display network. Your budget goes to banner spots and game apps instead of people searching for your service.
Your ads show for searches that are only loosely related.
Broad matching means "furnace repair" can trigger your ad for "furnace filters for sale" or "how to fix a furnace yourself". Every one of those clicks costs you the same as a real buyer's.
"Recommendations" that raise your budget.
The account dashboard constantly suggests raising budgets, loosening match types and switching on automated campaigns. Accept them all and spend climbs while lead quality falls.
Campaigns that decide everything for you.
Fully automated campaign types pick the searches, the placements and the bids. They can work with lots of conversion data — but on a small account they spend first and learn later, with your money.
Clicks that land on a slow, generic page.
Even perfect targeting is wasted when the click lands on a homepage that takes five seconds to load and buries the phone number. The click is paid for either way.
Why do owners and new agencies keep burning money?
Because the interface is complicated, the expensive settings are switched on by default, and nobody tells you which ones to switch off. That's why "ads don't work for me" is so common. It's almost never the product. It's the setup.
Same $1,000. Very different month.
A past client's story, and one plenty of owners will recognize. Running their own ads, they paid about $150 for every lead. After we took over the account, their leads cost about $35.

Same budget, same business, same phone. Four times more efficient, because the money went only where buyers were.
A past client's results. Your cost per lead depends on your industry and area, and we'll give you our estimate before you start.
Why our clients pay less per lead
We've run thousands of campaigns since 1998, in more than 300 industries. In most of them, we can estimate what a lead should cost within $5 to $10 before your campaign starts.
We know your numbers before we start.
In most industries we already know what a good lead should cost, which searches bring buyers, and when your busy season starts.
We switch off what burns money.
Every setting that spends without bringing leads gets turned off on day one, and stays off.
We send clicks to pages built to convert.
Fast, clear landing pages with your phone number and a short form on every screen. A click only counts if it turns into a call.
We estimate, test, then keep improving.
Before you start, you get a realistic range for what a lead should cost. The first weeks are planned tests to find what works in your market, and from there we keep optimizing to bring the number down.
Good Google Ads management is mostly a long list of small jobs, done properly and checked every week. This is what that looks like on every account we run.
Negative keywords, from day one.
Lists of searches you never want to pay for, like "jobs", "free", "DIY" and "course", built before launch and added to every week from the search terms report.
Brand and non-brand kept apart.
Searches for your business name are cheap, and many of those people would find you anyway. We run them in their own campaign, so they don't hide what new customers really cost.
Tight keyword matching.
Exact and phrase match for the searches that bring buyers. Broad match only where there's enough data to keep it under control.
Placements and locations locked down.
Search partners and the display network off for search campaigns, and location targeting set to people who are actually in your area, not people who are only "interested in" it.
Automated campaigns on a short leash.
Performance Max and other automated campaign types only when your budget and conversion data can support them, and always with brand exclusions, negative keywords and placement exclusions in place.
Tracking that counts real leads.
Calls, forms and quote requests tracked properly, with enhanced conversions, so Google's bidding learns from real inquiries, not page views.
Lead quality fed back to Google.
Where your setup allows it, we tell Google which leads turned into jobs, so it goes looking for more people like them.
Schedules and budgets matched to your phones.
Ads run hardest when someone can answer, and budget moves to the campaigns and hours that bring the cheapest good leads.
None of this is complicated on its own. Doing all of it, every week, on every account, is what keeps your cost per lead coming down.

34 leads in the first month, from a new website and Google Ads working together
Dtech Services installs and repairs heating and cooling in Ottawa. We built their new website in March and set up Google Ads around the jobs that pay best: furnace replacements, heat pumps and water heaters. The ads reach homeowners on the day they search, and the site turns those visits into calls.

Google Ads questions owners ask us
How fast will I get leads from Google Ads?
Usually within days of launch. Ads show up as soon as they're approved, so Google Ads is the fastest way we know to get new inquiries.
How much should I spend on Google Ads?
Our plans start at a $700 monthly ad budget. The right amount depends on what a lead costs in your market and how many jobs you want. Your plan shows both before you spend anything.
What does Wisdek charge for Google Ads management?
A one-time setup fee from $300, plus 25% to 15% of your ad spend depending on your budget. The ad budget itself goes directly to Google.
Can you guarantee my cost per lead?
Nobody can honestly promise an exact number before a campaign runs. What we can do is estimate it: in most industries, our estimate lands within $5 to $10, because we've run thousands of campaigns. Then we test, measure and optimize to bring it down.
Why do my ads cost so much right now?
Usually because of settings that are on by default or were "recommended": ads on partner sites and apps, loose keyword matching, automatic campaigns, and clicks sent to a slow page. We switch those off.
What are negative keywords, and why do they matter?
Negative keywords are searches you tell Google never to show your ad for. Without them, a roofer pays for "roofing jobs" and "roofing course". We build the lists before launch and add to them every week.
Should I bid on my own business name?
Usually yes, in a separate campaign. It's cheap, it stops competitors from taking the top spot on your name, and keeping it separate means you can always see what new customers really cost.
Is Performance Max right for a small business?
Sometimes, but not by default. It needs a solid budget and steady conversions to learn from. When we use it, we add brand exclusions, negative keywords and placement exclusions so it doesn't spend where it shouldn't.
Should I accept Google's recommendations?
Not automatically. Some are useful. Many just raise your budget. On a budget under $10,000 a month, most of the automatic features don't have enough data to work well.
Do I need a landing page?
Almost always. Sending ad clicks to your homepage wastes a lot of them. We make sure every click lands on a fast page built to turn visitors into calls.
Who owns the ad account?
You do. The budget is paid from your account, and you keep the account, the data and the history if you ever leave.
Do you work with manufacturers and B2B companies?
Yes. A contractor looking for a supplier searches just like a homeowner looking for a plumber. We count quote requests instead of calls, and agree on what a qualified inquiry is before we start.
Why do businesses choose Wisdek for Google Ads?
Because we've run thousands of campaigns since 1998, we switch off what burns money, and we estimate your cost per lead before you start, then keep improving it. That's why trades, service businesses and manufacturers across Canada and the US choose Wisdek to run their Google Ads.
